Why your restaurant does not show up in Google Maps

Almost always the profile, almost never the website. And the fields that matter are not the ones owners expect.

A business is missing from the Google Maps results because its Google Business Profile is incomplete, unverified, or set to categories nobody searches for. The profile carries 32 percent of what decides local ranking, more than any other single factor group. Your website carries 15 percent. Fixing the profile is free and takes about an hour.

What actually decides the map result

  • 32 % of local map ranking comes from the Google Business Profile itself
  • 20 % comes from reviews, their number, their rating and how recent they are
  • 8 of 10 of the strongest single ranking factors sit in the profile, not on your site

The primary category outranks everything you write

The category you pick is the single strongest factor a business controls. A Thai restaurant listed as "Restaurant" competes with every kitchen in the city. Listed as "Thai restaurant" it competes with a much smaller field for exactly the people who wanted Thai food. Secondary categories are the free part almost nobody uses: you get up to nine, and in Chiang Mai we found agencies with none.

Opening hours are a ranking factor, and that surprises everyone

Whether you are open at the moment someone searches weighs more than secondary categories and more than the position of your map pin. BrightLocal measured it across 50 businesses in 10 industries: rankings drop when the profile says closed. If your kitchen answers LINE messages until 20:00 but your profile says 17:00, you are invisible for the three hours when tourists decide where to eat.

Verification, address, photos, in that order

An unverified profile can rank, but it can also be edited by strangers and it never gets the trust signals. A hidden address costs you the fourth strongest factor, and most restaurants have no reason to hide one. Photos are the part Google asks for directly: when a profile is short on images, Google prompts the owner in the dashboard. That prompt is a hint about what the profile is missing, and it is worth taking literally.

The uncomfortable one

Do not put your city or your service into the business name to rank better. It works, your competitors do it, and it is against Google's rules. The penalty is suspension of the profile, which costs you the one place where you are actually visible. Use the name as it appears on your shopfront and put the city in the address field, where it counts anyway.
